Background

Hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS), also known as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), is a group of clinical syndromes characterized by fever, hepatosplenomegaly, pancytopenia (more than two lines of involvement), coagulopathy, and proliferation of histiocytes that actively engulf morphologically intact RBCs, WBCs, and platelets. It can be divided into primary HLH (familial and immunodeficiency-associated) and secondary HLH (infection-associated, malignancy-associated, macrophage activation syndrome, immunosuppression/organ transplantation). Molecular diagnosis consistent with HLH is one of the important diagnostic criteria.
