What is Mpox?

Mpox (Monkeypox) is a zoonotic viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus, which is clinically characterized by fever, rash, and enlarged lymph nodes. The disease is mainly endemic in Central and West Africa. Since May 2022, cases of monkeypox have been reported successively from countries where the disease is not endemic, and human-to-human transmission has emerged. At present, the risk of monkeypox infection to the public is low, so it is recommended to actively understand the knowledge of monkeypox prevention and control and do a good job in health protection.



How to Spread?

The main source of infection is rodents infected with monkeypox virus. Also, primates (monkeys, chimpanzees, humans, etc.) that come into contact with rodents carrying the monkeypox virus may carry the virus and potentially infect others. The virus invades the body through mucous membranes and damaged skin. Humans are infected mainly by contact with lesional exudates, blood, and other body fluids, or by bites and scratches from infected animals. While human-to-human transmission is mainly through close contact or droplets, and contact with virus-contaminated objects may also be infected. Besides, monkeypox is also vertically transmitted in utero. And sexual transmission of infection cannot be excluded.



Harm of Mpox?

Monkeypox is usually a self-limiting illness, and most have a favorable prognosis. Severe cases are common in young children and immunocompromised people, and the prognosis is related to the clade of infected viruses, the degree of viral exposure, previous health status, and the severity of complications. For West African and Congo Basin clades, the case-fatality rates are about 3% and 10%, respectively.



How to Diagnose?


Probable case definition


Those with the above clinical manifestations have any one of the following epidemic histories:
(1) A history of living in an overseas monkeypox reporting area within 21 days before the onset of illness.
(2) Close contact with confirmed monkeypox cases within 21 days before the onset of illness.
(3) Exposure to blood, body fluids, and secretions of monkeypox virus-infected animals within 21 days before the onset of illness.


Confirmed case definition


Meeting the definition of probable case and monkeypox virus nucleic acid positive or virus isolation positive by laboratory test. For such cases that meet the definition of probable or confirmed cases, they should be reported according to the relevant requirements of infectious diseases.

Minimum detection limit: 500 copies/mL.

Specificity: This kit has no cross reaction with the smallpox virus, vaccinia virus, cowpox virus, measles virus, rubella virus, parvovirus B19, varicella-zoster virus, syphilis virus, herpes simplex virus, EB virus, human herpesvirus 1, human herpesvirus 7, human herpesvirus 8, and cytomegalovirus.

Precision: The coefficient of variation (CV%) of intra-batch precision Ct is ≤ 5%.
